Language Arts

In Language Arts, the whole school will be writing a second functional writing piece. Within the next week or so all grade 5 students will have written their second news article.  We have been focusing on punctuation when writing, looking at proper capitalization, commas, and end punctuation.  We are also continuing to work on our ‘Locked Room’ challenges for our Locked Room project.  We are just finishing up our novel The City of Ember.  We will be watching the movie next week.

Science

We continued to explore the different types of chemical reactions.  Students inflated balloons using carbon dioxide gas (created by mixing baking soda and vinegar) and witnessed a colour change when bleach was added to coloured water.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, we have just finished  the Cordillera region.  Students are now working on their Amazing Race final projects.  For this project, students will be creating an informative poster about the Cordillera, Canadian Shield, or Great Lakes St. Lawrence Lowlands region.  We will be having our Amazing Race final exam on Tuesday, February 11th.  A study guide has been shared with all students on google drive.

Reminders

The Skate Shack

Our skating program will be held on February 10th-12th.  Each division II class will have the opportunity to skate 3 times.  We are in need of parent volunteers to help hand out skates and fit helmets as well as tie up skate laces during these sessions. If interested, please email Mrs. Latham at ajlatham@cbe.ab.ca.

Pink Shirt Day

Pink Shirt (anti-bullying) day will be held on Feb. 26th.  Students and teachers are encouraged to wear a pink shirt that day if they have one.

Valentine’s Day

On Wednesday February 12th, SVS students will be participating in a variety of kindness activities and will not be exchanging store-bought or homemade Valentine cards. At this time, we would like to bring full attention to the care and safekeeping of our students.  We ask that you join us in keeping them safe by avoiding sending treats to school as many of the commercial Valentine treats include peanut or peanut by-products in them. Thank you for your support.
