February 18th - February 21 Week Review

Highlights

Student Teachers
We are happy to welcome back our Grade 5 Student Teachers from the University of Calgary.  Ms. Maxwell, Ms. Trembley, Ms. Miller and Mr. Bernabei will be with us until April 18th.

Social Studies
We have wrapped up our Amazing Race unit looking at the geographic regions of Canada.  Moving forward, students will be learning about the history of Canada, starting with the six Indigenous cultural groups that habited this land prior to European colonization.  These groups are: the people of the Northwest Coast, the Plains, the Plateau, the Arctic, the Subarctic, and the Eastern Woodlands.

Language Arts
Students will be learning about various forms of poetry.  They will begin this unit by discussing music as a form of poetry and will present some of their favourite songs to their peers.  We will then be discussing various literary devices found in the lyrics, including: similes, metaphors, and use of personification.

Math
We have just finished our unit on long division.  Starting next week, students will be learning about measurement. We will be looking at centimeters, millimeters, meters, kilometers and converting between various units of measurement.

Long Division tests will be marked and handed back at the beginning of next week.  Please continue to practice this skill with your child on a weekly basis to further strengthen their understanding.

ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen
Thank you to Chef Leigh at ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen for providing an awesome field trip experience.  Students had an opportunity to learn about food safety, chop fruits and vegetables, and make pizza, muffins and dip.   You can find the recipes at the website here: https://www.atcoblueflamekitchen.com/en-ca/recipes-menus.html
