Highlights

Poetry
We continued our study of poetry by having the students create a pocket visual journal page.  For this assignment, students were asked to choose one line from the poem Keep a Poem in Your Pocket by Beatrice Schenk de Rednier.  They were then asked to decorate the page with something that brings them joy.  Students will use their pocket pages as a place to keep their written poems.

Social Studies
In Social Studies, we took a closer look at the Blackfoot Confederacy, namely the Siksika, Kainai, and Northern Piikani nations.  We read the story Napi and the Rock, and students discussed various questions, including:

  • What is the lesson of the story?
  • When you offer someone a gift, is it okay to just take it back?
  • Why is sharing important?
  • If you hurt someone’s feelings by not sharing, how can you make things right?
  • Why do people share things that are valuable to them? Have you ever done that?
  • Have you ever wanted to take back a gift you gave to someone? What did you do?

Science
In science, we baked cookies and determined that bakers and chemists have very similar roles. Students learned a number of chemical reactions take place when baking cookies.  We smelled evidence of these chemical reactions and discussed the amazing aroma coming from the oven. Here is an excellent video that breaks down the science behind baking cookies.

Math
In Math, we continued learning about measurement.  Students had an opportunity to measure various things around the classroom in meters and centimeters, including the length of the classroom, the whiteboard, their height, their height up to their armpits, and the doorknob to the floor.
