Update

Hello everyone!

First and foremost, we miss you! We hope that you and your family are taking the necessary precautions to stay safe during this unprecedented time.   As we continue to look ahead to what teaching and learning will look like for the remainder of the school year, we wanted to provide you with an update of where we were in the curriculum prior to the cancellation, as well as a few online resources we often use in our classroom.

Stay safe, and we hope to see you soon!

COVID19 Children's Story

If you are looking to have a conversation with your child about COVID19, but are having difficulty finding kid friendly resources, please see the link below.

Personal Belongings

There may be a need for some families to pick up critical personal items such as medication, inhalers, epi-pens, digital devices, etc. from the school before spring break. We are able to facilitate this but are asking families only to do so if it is necessary. All other student belongings will remain safe and available for pick-up when it is safe to do so (date and time to be determined). At this time, we will keep student work at school in order to complete and update important learning assessments. They will be returned to students when it is safe to do so.  Thank you for your understanding.

Current Units of Study

Chemistry

Covered in Class

  • Learning about Atoms, Molecules, and Elements
  • States of Matter (Solid, Liquid, Gas)
  • Performing experiments using common household ingredients
  • Looking for evidence of chemical reactions (New substance is produced, gas is produced, smell, temperature change, colour change)
  • Exploring the difference between chemical and physical changes
Remaining

  • Surface Tension
  • Crystals

We have shared our unit study guide with all students on Google Drive based on the lessons we have taught so far.  Feel free to review these lessons with your child.

Algebra

  • Explaining the purpose of the letter variable in a given addition, subtraction, multiplication or division equation with one unknown; e.g., 36 ÷ n = 6
  • Solving a given single-variable equation with the unknown in any of the terms; e.g., n + 2 = 5, 4 + a = 7, 6 = r – 2, 10 = 2c)

We also encourage having your child continue to practice their basic math fluency (adding and subtracting numbers, single digit multiplication facts up to 9x9, single digit division facts) to improve their overall speed and accuracy.

Indigenous Canadian History

  • The history of Canada prior to European contact
  • Learning about different Indigenous groups and their traditions, stories and customs

Please note the CBC has produced an excellent documentary about Canada’s history entitled The Story of Us.  All episodes are available for free on YouTube.  However, please note that some of the episodes contain graphic content and scenes of war.  Viewer discretion is advised.

Poetry

  • Learning about different forms of poetry
  • Writing our own poems
  • To date, we have learned about Acrostic, Blackout, Cinquain and Haiku poems

Book Clubs

Students were all given a book to read with a small group of students.  Students were asked to find evidence of the setting, physical description of the character, as well as personality traits in the early chapters of the book.  As we continue to read, students would have been tasked with explaining and showing evidence of how the main character in their story changed throughout the book.

We recommend your child reads for at least 20 minutes a day, and ideally, has an opportunity to discuss or reflect on what they have read with an adult or peer.
